The Butter & Blush Journal
Origins
The Cream That Started Everything
The cream Virginia made for her mother, kept in the record.
There are moments in life that quietly divide everything into two chapters.
Before.
And after.
For me, that moment came on January 31, 2023, the day my mother was diagnosed with cancer.
The diagnosis changed everything.
Like anyone who loves someone deeply, my first instinct was to ask myself what I could do. I wasn’t a doctor. I couldn’t change the diagnosis. I couldn’t take away her fear—or mine.
But I could make something with my own hands.
What surprised me most wasn’t sadness.
It was anger.
I was angry that cancer had become part of our lives. Angry that there was so much I couldn’t control. And that anger made one thing very clear to me.
I didn’t want my mother putting anything on her body that I hadn’t made myself.
At the time, it wasn’t a business idea.
I wasn’t thinking about building a beauty company.
I simply wanted to protect my mom the only way I knew how.
I didn’t know it then, but it was the beginning of Butter & Blush.
My first idea was to make her a deodorant.
In my mind, it made perfect sense. It was something she would use every day, something that came into contact with her skin, and I wanted complete confidence in every ingredient.
When I handed it to her, she smiled and said something I’ll never forget.
“Ginny… I don’t use deodorant.”
I laughed.
Back to the drawing board.
So I asked myself a better question.
What does my mom actually use every single day?
The answer came immediately.
Moisturizer.
For years she had complained that she could never find one that truly kept her face and neck hydrated. She had tried countless products over the years, and every one of them seemed to promise more than it delivered. Even after I had lived in Europe, where I thought for sure I would find the perfect moisturizer for her, she was still searching.
That became my mission.
Not to make the most luxurious moisturizer.
Not to make the trendiest moisturizer.
I wanted to make the moisturizer my mom had been looking for all those years.
Fortunately, I wasn’t starting from scratch.
The years I had spent in Italy studying cosmetic formulation while preparing for Planettoon® and Giggles & Glow had given me something I didn’t realize I would one day need. I already understood ingredients, preservation systems, skin physiology, emulsions, and how individual materials worked together to create a finished product.
Now that knowledge had a completely different purpose.
I started reading everything I could find.
Clinical studies.
Supplier documentation.
Technical papers.
Ingredient data.
I wanted to understand every ingredient that could bring moisture into the skin, help keep it there, strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, and leave skin feeling comfortable hour after hour.
One thing became very clear.
Real hydration is never about one miracle ingredient.
It comes from ingredients working together.
Some attract water.
Some help reduce moisture loss.
Some support the skin barrier.
Some soothe skin that feels uncomfortable.
Some simply make the experience of applying a cream feel beautiful.
No single ingredient could do everything.
But together, they could create something far more meaningful.
That philosophy still guides every formula I create today.
I’ve never believed in adding ingredients simply because they’re fashionable or because they look impressive on a label.
Every ingredient has to earn its place.
Every percentage has a purpose.
Every formula should make sense.
The moisturizer didn’t happen overnight.
It became dozens of versions.
I changed emulsifiers.
Adjusted active ingredients.
Modified textures.
Started over.
More than once.
Sometimes the changes were dramatic.
Sometimes they were so subtle that no one else would have noticed.
But I noticed.
Every revision taught me something.
Every batch brought me closer to the moisturizer I had imagined for my mom.
I wasn’t thinking about customers.
I wasn’t thinking about product launches.
I wasn’t thinking about building a collection.
I was thinking about one person.
My mom.
When she finally used the cream, something changed.
Not because I thought I had made the perfect moisturizer.
But because, for the first time since her diagnosis, I felt like there was something I could actually do for her.
Something tangible.
Something made with intention.
Something that was entirely mine.
That feeling is impossible to describe.
And it’s one I’ve never forgotten.
After that, my mind wouldn’t stop.
I remember thinking,
“Well… if I made her a moisturizer, she needs something to cleanse her skin first.”
Then she needed a night cream.
Then I started thinking about daytime textures.
Then richer textures.
Then lighter textures.
Then I found myself asking a completely different question.
“Why am I buying shampoo if I can make it myself?”
Then it became body care.
I’ve always loved a great body scrub, so naturally I wanted to create my own.
Then body creams.
Hair care.
Lip care.
Products for my daughters.
Products for my friends.
Products for the men in my family.
I never decided to build a collection.
The collection grew because every time I looked at something in my bathroom, I wondered if I could make something I loved even more.
Looking back now, I realize Butter & Blush was never born from a business plan.
It grew from one question.
How can I make something better for my mom?
That question became another.
Then another.
And before I realized what was happening, I wasn’t just creating products for her anymore.
I was creating them for the people I loved.
Eventually, I began creating them for people I had never met.
That first moisturizer has evolved countless times since then.
The ingredients have changed.
The technology has improved.
The formula has become more refined.
But every time I see a jar of Luscious Boosting Water Cream, I think about why it exists.
Not because I wanted to create a skincare brand.
Not because I wanted to launch a business.
But because my mom needed a moisturizer.
Sometimes the smallest decisions end up changing your life.
One cream became a routine.
One routine became a collection.
One collection became Butter & Blush.
And it all started with a daughter who was angry, determined, and willing to do whatever she could for the person she loved most.
