Why Texture Matters More Than People Think

People often assume the most important part of a skincare formula is the active ingredient.

I understand why.

It’s the ingredient everyone talks about. The one printed on the front of the box. The one that becomes the headline.

But after years of formulating, I’ve come to believe something different.

Texture matters just as much.

Maybe even more.

Because no matter how extraordinary a formula may be, if it doesn’t feel beautiful on the skin, people simply won’t enjoy using it.

And if they don’t enjoy using it, they won’t use it consistently.

To me, texture isn’t decoration.

It’s part of the formula’s character.

It’s the first conversation a product has with your skin.

Long before an ingredient begins doing its work, your hands have already made a decision.

Does it feel elegant?

Does it disappear effortlessly?

Does it leave the skin comfortable?

Does it make you want to reach for it again tomorrow?

Those questions matter.

Probably more than most people realize.

When I formulate, I spend an extraordinary amount of time thinking about things many people never notice.

The way a cream melts.

The way a gel breaks across the skin.

The slip of an emulsion.

The cushion of a butter.

The finish it leaves behind five minutes later.

Those tiny details are never accidental.

They are designed.

One of the reasons I love formulating is that texture gives me endless possibilities.

Different emulsifiers create entirely different experiences.

A cream can feel rich without feeling heavy.

Silky without feeling slippery.

Velvety without feeling waxy.

Those differences are often measured in fractions of a percent, yet they completely change how a product feels.

Over the years, I’ve become especially drawn to olive-derived emulsifiers.

Not because they’re fashionable.

Because they allow me to build textures that feel sophisticated, comforting, and beautifully balanced.

The same is true for the gelling systems I choose.

I’ve spent years exploring exceptional gelling ingredients developed in France because I wanted gels that feel alive.

Not stiff.

Not sticky.

Not something that simply holds a formula together.

I wanted translucency.

Movement.

That beautiful moment when a gel almost disappears as it touches the skin.

It’s exactly what I imagined when I first began developing it.

If there is one formula that truly challenged me, it is that one.

Turning rich, exotic butters into a translucent gel isn’t the easiest path.

In fact, there were many easier ways I could have approached that formula.

But easy has never interested me very much.

I became fascinated by the idea that something as rich as a butter could feel unexpectedly light.

That contradiction kept pulling me back to the formulation bench.

Batch after batch.

Adjustment after adjustment.

Until one day, the texture finally became exactly what I had imagined.

That moment is one of the greatest joys of formulation.

People often ask me what my favorite product is.

The truth is, sometimes it’s not the finished product at all.

Sometimes it’s the texture.

Sometimes it’s watching a cream fold back into itself.

Or seeing a gel catch the light.

Or feeling a formula glide across someone’s skin for the very first time.

After nearly two years of sharing Butter & Blush with customers, one thing has become remarkably consistent.

Before anyone asks about an ingredient…

Before they ask about peptides…

Before they ask about botanical extracts…

They touch the formula.

And almost every time, they say the same thing.

“Oh my goodness… this feels incredible.”

I smile every time I hear it.

Because that feeling didn’t happen by accident.

It came from hundreds of decisions most people will never see.
