THE BUTTER & BLUSH JOURNAL
FORMULATION PHILOSOPHY · VOLUME V
Long before a formula begins, a journey has already started.
THE WORLD, GATHERED ON ONE TABLE.
I · THE ADDRESS
When people ask me where Butter & Blush is made, the answer is simple.
At my formulation bench.
But that’s only where the story ends.
The real story begins much earlier.
Long before a cream ever reaches a jar.
Long before percentages are calculated.
Long before the first ingredient touches the beaker.
Every ingredient already has a history.
It has an address.
II · THE STANDARDS
Some begin in the laboratories of Germany, where cosmetic scientists spend years refining a single active until it performs with extraordinary precision.
Others begin high in the Swiss Alps, where botanicals have adapted to survive some of nature’s harshest conditions, inspiring ingredients that protect, strengthen, and restore the skin.
Some arrive from France, where formulation is treated almost like couture. Texture matters just as much as performance, because an elegant formula should feel as beautiful as it works.
Others travel from Italy, where perfume is never simply fragrance. It is memory, emotion, atmosphere, and craftsmanship woven together into something you cannot quite explain but never forget.
Australia has given us remarkable botanical extracts.
Spain continues to inspire innovation through plant science.
Belgium quietly develops ingredients that deserve far more attention than they receive.
Brazil has introduced extraordinary technologies for healthy hair.
Denmark and the Netherlands have become home to sophisticated formulation systems that make creams feel lighter, gels feel silkier, and fragrances unfold with grace.
Every country contributes something different.
Every laboratory has its own philosophy.
Every scientist leaves a fingerprint on the ingredient they create.
That is where Butter & Blush begins.
Not with trends.
With respect.
EVERY BOTANICAL CARRIES ITS ORIGIN WITH IT.
III · THE CONVERSATION
One of the questions I am asked most often is why my formulas contain so many ingredients.
The answer is simple.
Because I have never believed one ingredient should carry the entire responsibility.
Real skincare is a conversation.
One ingredient attracts water.
Another helps hold it there.
Another strengthens the skin’s natural barrier.
Another improves the way the formula melts into the skin.
Another ensures everything remains beautifully stable.
None of them compete.
They collaborate.
IV · THE TEST
That philosophy has guided every formula I have ever created.
Every ingredient has one question to answer before it earns a place inside a Butter & Blush formula.
Why are you here?
If the answer is because it is fashionable…
It doesn’t belong.
If the answer is because everyone else is using it…
It doesn’t belong.
If the answer is because it sounds impressive on a label…
It doesn’t belong.
Every ingredient has to arrive with purpose.
Sometimes that purpose is visible.
Sometimes it quietly supports everything around it.
Both are equally important.
People are often surprised when I tell them I spend just as much time choosing a gelling ingredient as I do choosing an active.
To many people, a thickener is simply a thickener.
I don’t see it that way.
Anyone can buy a commodity ingredient.
I am interested in what happens when one of the world’s great cosmetic laboratories takes that same natural starting point and spends years refining it until it behaves differently.
Until it creates elegance.
Until it transforms the experience of touching the skin.
That difference may not appear on an ingredient list.
But you feel it the moment the formula reaches your fingertips.
Texture is never accidental.
It is engineered with intention.
AT THE BENCH. TEXTURE, ENGINEERED WITH INTENTION.
V · FREEDOM
Being an independent formulation house gives Butter & Blush something I never take for granted.
Freedom.
Some of the world’s largest beauty companies create extraordinary products, but they also carry extraordinary responsibility. Reformulating a product produced in the millions is a decision that can take years.
I don’t have that limitation.
When a truly remarkable ingredient is introduced, I can study it.
Read the research.
Request the samples.
Test it.
Reject it.
Test it again.
And if it genuinely makes the formula better…
I can welcome it into Butter & Blush.
Not because it is new.
Because it earned its place.
Innovation should never exist for its own sake.
It should solve a problem.
Improve a texture.
Strengthen a formula.
Create a better experience for the person using it.
That is the only kind of innovation worth pursuing.
AN INDEPENDENT HOUSE. SMALL BATCHES, COMPLETE FREEDOM.
VI · AT THE BENCH
Sometimes I look across my formulation bench and smile.
A marine active developed in France rests beside a botanical innovation from Switzerland.
A biotechnology ingredient from Germany waits beside an extract from Australia.
An Italian fragrance sits next to a sophisticated formulation system from Denmark.
Thousands of miles apart.
Together inside one formula.
That has always felt quietly extraordinary to me.
A MARINE ACTIVE, THOUSANDS OF MILES FROM WHERE IT BEGAN.
VII · THE PEOPLE
People often think a skincare company begins with products.
Butter & Blush begins with people.
Scientists.
Botanists.
Farmers.
Researchers.
Perfumers.
Chemists.
Individuals all over the world who dedicated years of their lives to perfecting one small piece of a much larger story.
I simply have the privilege of bringing those stories together.
EVERY JOURNEY ENDS IN THE SAME PLACE. ON SKIN.
Every jar that leaves Butter & Blush carries more than a formula.
It carries years of curiosity.
Years of research.
Years of craftsmanship.
Collected from around the world.
Then brought together with one intention.
To create something that truly deserves a place on your shelf.
The world doesn’t arrive at Butter & Blush all at once.
It arrives one exceptional ingredient at a time.
